The master's thesis deals with various urban planning and architectural criteria related to the border area of the Goriška region.
Gorizia and Nova Gorica, as the main gravitational cores of the once unified region, developed in parallel after the new border was drawn and the construction of the new city began, regardless of urban planning across the border. Over time this caused spatial, functional and other disconnections, which currently represents a major obstacle to development, since as separate these cities are unable to keep up with the stronger regional urban cores in the wider area.
The aim of the thesis is to investigate how the border area could be evaluated as a meeting point for the reintegration of border cities as a region and, through well-considered urban and architectural interventions, establish a connected conurbation that would represent a new common core of the cross-border region.
The thesis is based on an analysis of the historical and spatial development of the region and the wider Goriška urban space, study of the existing state of the selected urban location and the architectural treatment of the buildings.
The urban planning part of the thesis highlights Erjavčeva ulica and Kolodvorska pot, i.e. the area of the northern railway station with the border area, as key in the formation of the Goriška conurbation, as they represent an opportunity to connect both border towns and also smaller suburban settlements due to their location.
The area of the northern railway station is currently partially degraded and subject to speculative investments without regard to the historical and cultural significance of the area, which is why the thesis proposes its evaluation. It proposes an establishment of a linear park with an extension to the northern railway station as a junction of various urban functions and cultures, various nodes of the conurbation and transformation of the existing shopping centre into a space with a high concentration of mixed programs, which would serve as an entry and exit point to the conurbation and the region.
The architectural part of the thesis covers the renovation and adaptation of the technical cultural heritage of the Bohinjska proga. A new cross-border connecting program content is proposed for the Remiza and Vodni stolp in the form of a learning centre and an art centre, which are embedded in important cultural buildings.
The master's thesis raises questions about the future of border areas and offers a reflection on connecting the specific Goriška region. The proposed solutions would thus contribute to the revitalization of the border area and enable the connection of border towns of Goriška and the region.
