The master's thesis Analysis of Sustainable Development Activities and Content in 5th Grade Social Studies Lesson Plans examines how primary school education contributes to raising awareness of sustainable development. This topic is particularly relevant in the context of global challenges concerning the environment, society, and economy. The main research question explores how lesson plans incorporate the goals of sustainable development, interdisciplinarity, critical thinking, and practical activities.
The research is based on a qualitative analysis of three year-long (lesson) plans for the subject of Social Studies in the 5th grade. The objective is to determine how these plans promote sustainability competencies and integrate lesson content with the local environment. The study employs document analysis to evaluate the plans based on predefined categories.
The key findings indicate considerable variability among the lesson plans. The most effective approaches proved to be interdisciplinary and practice-oriented, allowing students to engage actively and relate their learning to real-life contexts. "The study suggests increasing the use of practical activities, enhancing teacher support, and fostering stronger collaboration with local communities.
This research provides guidelines for developing pedagogical practices that embed sustainability content into primary school curricula. Approaches that encourage collaboration between students and local stakeholders support a deeper understanding of environmental and social challenges and promote active citizenship from an early age.
