Abstract

Title:
Hydraulic modeling of erosion conditions on the section of the Hrastnica river with a proposal for a conceptual design of the arrangement after the flood event in August 2023 : master thesis
Abstract:
The master’s thesis focuses on the analysis of flood and erosion conditions in the torrential stream Hrastnica, a tributary of the Poljanska Sora near Škofja Loka, which was severely impacted by the catastrophic flood event of August 2023. The floodwaters and accompanying processes of river and torrential erosion caused destructive impacts on watercourses and riparian land. Considering the altered hydraulic conditions along the studied section of Hrastnica, which resulted from the destructive power of water flows and erosion processes during the flood event, a comparative analysis of flow and flood conditions for high-water discharges before and after the flood was conducted using a 2D hydraulic model. The hydraulic modeling of erosion conditions was performed using an enhanced 2D hydraulic sediment transport model, which aimed to closely simulate actual river and torrential erosion processes observed in the Hrastnica during the flood event. The results of sediment transport modeling were used to create erosion hazard maps and to analyze erosion processes in specific cross-sections along the stream. Additionally, the influence of the selected sediment boundary condition on the modeled sediment transport processes was examined. Based on the results of hydraulic simulations and analyses, the thesis concludes with a conceptual design for the arrangement of the Hrastnica section. The proposed measures aim to improve flood safety and mitigate the accompanying processes of river and torrential erosion along the studied stream section.
