Telemetrija in njena uporaba pri proučevanju evrazijskega risa (Lynx lynx) v sklopu projekta LIFE Lynx

Abstract
Proučevanje ekologije prostoživečih živali je bilo zahtevno zlasti v preteklosti, saj so bile raziskovalcem v pomoč predvsem metode, ki so težko izvedljive in so večinoma odvisne od okoljskih dejavnikov ter obnašanja proučevane živalske vrste. Glavna metoda je bila neposredno opazovanje živali ali znakov njihove prisotnosti. Z razvojem telemetrije je nastal velik preskok v raziskovanju živalskih vrst; najbolj je bilo to opaziti pri vrstah, ki so zlasti zahtevne za proučevanje. To so vrste, ki se človeka izogibajo, živijo v težko dostopnih okoljih in so aktivne ponoči. Ena takšnih vrst je tudi evrazijski ris (Lynx lynx), ki je izginil na velikem območju zgodovinske razširjenosti, v zadnjih letih pa se s pomočjo naravovarstvenih projektov zopet vrača. Eden takšnih projektov, ki so namenjeni varstvu risa, je projekt LIFE Lynx, čigar glavni cilj je rešiti populacijo risa v Dinaridih in jugovzhodnih Alpah pred ponovnim izumrtjem. Glavna akcija projekta je doselitev risa iz romunskih in slovaških Karpatov v Slovenijo in na Hrvaško. Vsi doseljeni risi so opremljeni s telemetrično ovratnico, kar omogoča zelo dober vpogled, kako se risi vključijo v obstoječo dinarsko populacijo. Poleg tega telemetrija omogoča zaznavo plenjenja, aktivnosti živali, paritvene ekskurzije, mesta brlogov in območja, ki jih risi uporabljajo za prečkanje večjih prometnic. S takimi pomembnimi podatki lahko dobro prepoznamo dejavnike in območja, ki so pomembna za preživetje in ohranitev te vrste.

Title:Telemetry and its application to the study of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in the LIFE Lynx project
Abstract:
Studying wildlife ecology and behavior has been very challenging in the past, as researchers have had to rely mainly on methods that are difficult to implement and depend largely on environmental factors and the behaviour of the species being studied. They have relied mainly on direct observation of the animals and on signs of presence being found in the field. With the development of telemetry, the field has seen a gigantic step towards better understanding of animals, most notably in species that are more challenging to study by other methods. These are species that avoid humans, live in hard accessible environments and are active at night. One such species is the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), which disappeared over a large part of its former range but has been making a comeback in recent years thanks to conservation projects. One such project is LIFE Lynx, whose main objective is to save the lynx population in the Dinarides and the south-eastern Alps from extinction. The main goal of the project is to reintroduce lynx from the Romanian and Slovak Carpathians to Slovenia and Croatia. All introduced lynx are fitted with a telemetry collar, which gives us a very good insight into how the lynx integrate into the existing Dinaric population. Telemetry also allows us to detect the locations of kills, mating excursions, den sites and areas that are used for road crossing by lynx etc. With this important information, we can quickly identify factors and areas that are important for the survival of the species.
