The history of cinematography is rich with numerous changes that have allowed the transformation of the film industry from its humble beginnings with black and white silent films to the films we enjoy today. Modern entertainment is hard to imagine without the film industry, which not only helped shape our popular culture, but also enabled countless artists and actors to test the boundaries of human imagination, emotions and fashion. Film companies have played key roles in this transformation. They provided funding, resources, and manpower for film creation. The most influential companies even have the capacity to set trends and shape the entire film industry. The central theme of my work is the analysis of the collaboration network of film companies, drawn from the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Using the Pajek program, I analyzed the network of film companies with the aim of exploring their collaboration over time and discovering their role and importance in the network. Understanding the patterns of collaboration among film companies is crucial as it illuminates the dynamics of the industry, reveals key relationships, alliances and strategies that have shaped the development of the industry, and predicts trends and competitive dynamics in the film industry. The analysis was limited to American film companies in the period from 1880 to 2019, with this limitation being set based on the available data in the IMDb database. I investigated which film companies were most influential and central in different time periods, which companies most often collaborated with each other, and how collaboration has changed over a period of 140 years. The aim of this work is to uncover key patterns and trends in collaboration among American film companies.
