In the article, we evaluate the aims and objectives, literary content, standards of knowledge/expected achievements, didactic recommendations (approaches/strategies) of the gymnasium curriculum for Slovenian language and literature. We compare it with its predecessor (1998). Based on the evaluation, we are formulating guidelines for a new grammar school curriculum for Slovenian, focusing on literature, taking into account the Starting points for curruculum renewal in primary and secondary level of education (2022). As a new general aim of teaching literature, we determine the development of literary competence (in 2008, the general aim is to educate a literarily cultivated reader, and in 1998, active interaction with fiction). We create three groups of general aims and objectives: literary texts and students' response to them are in focus of literary class, historical informations are reduced in favor of literary system. We discuss general aims and objectives.
