The aim of the article is to examine and evaluate the part-of-speech criteria and to analyze their presence and hierarchical distribution in two contemporary Slovene grammars, by Anton Bajec et al. (1971) and by Jože Toporišič (2004). Both grammars are characterized by syntactic, semantic and morphological part-of-speech criteria, but with a different hierarchical distribution: the dominant criterion in the 1971 grammar is a semantic one, while in Toporišič's grammar it is a syntactic one. Despite the differences in criterion distribution, both part-of-speech classifications appear to be problematic because of the overlapping classes and subclasses.
