Slovenian missionaries working in the United States of America, because of their knowledge of Indian languages, also took up missionary tasks among Native American tribes in the Canadian province of Ontario. They were asked to do so by the Canadian bishops. The Native Americans also used books prepared by Slovenian missionaries. The aim was to establish contacts at the level of the development of religious life, the creation of church structures, and the incorporation into the life of the Native American tribes of elements which the missionaries understood as an expression of the improvement of their living conditions and the assertion of their rights as an ethnic community. The contribution of Slovenian missionaries is still commemorated today in some cultural and religious monuments and printed material, as well as in commemorative events.
