Abstract

Title:Development of Czech orthography from the 14th to the 16th century
Abstract:
The topic of my thesis is the development of Czech orthography in the period from the 14th to the 16th century. From the founding of the Prague university, through Hus' sermons in Czech, to the activity of the Unity of the Brethren in the period of humanism, the use of the Czech language grew in the Czech lands, and with this came the need to establish an orthographic norm. In my diploma thesis, I will first outline the historical and cultural development of the Czech lands in the period in question, since the events of that time had a strong impact on language development as well. In the second part, I will discuss Czech orthography from digraphic orthography to the development and establishment of diacritic orthography. I will focus on the first Czech grammar from 1533 and on the so-called Brethren orthography, which became established in 16th century prints. In the last part, based on the books from the period in question, I will check to what extent diacritical spelling actually became established.
