This master's thesis addresses the Habsburg and Russian pornographic novel at the turn of the 20th century. The analysis of the novels Josefine Mutzenbacher oder die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt and Sanin focuses on the pornographic and obscene language of both novels and the purpose of each language respectively. The two cultural milieus in which the novels were written, the pornographic discourse of the novels, and the analogies and differences between the two cultures in terms of themes and writing style, as well as in terms of perception, understanding and acceptance of pornography are juxtaposed. Furthermore, the thesis examines the social issues of the Habsburg and Russian societies at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries and how these are reflected in literature.
