Abstract

Title:Shape of the solar corona during total solar eclipses
Abstract:
The observation of the solar corona is important for understanding the magnetic activity of the Sun, which influences all phenomena on the solar surface and in the solar atmosphere. In this master thesis, we focus on the study of the solar corona during total solar eclipses in solar cycles 23, 24 and 25. We process and analyse in detail 14 solar eclipse images taken between 1998 and 2023. Using the Ludendorff flattening index, we show that the shape of the solar corona varies with the 11-year solar cycle. The solar corona can be successfully analysed with freely available astronomy softwares, so the use of the selected softwares is also suitable for schools as part of elective subjects, science days or as a supplement for students interested in astronomy.
