Introduction: Physically disabled people are people with injuries or diseases that reduce their ability to live and work. They use walking sticks, crutches or a wheelchair to move. Their impairments, in interaction with various obstacles, can inhibit their full and effective participation in society. The main problem they face is limited movement. It is necessary to enable them to achieve and maintain their independence. Physical accessibility is one of the fundamental rights of physically disabled individuals in order to ensure their integration into society. They are often treated differently from the rest of the population, attention is paid only to their impairments, and understanding of the difficulty of the other obstacles they face in life is limited. Occupational therapists play a very important role in changing and adapting the environment. The primary tasks of occupational therapists include assessment of the environment, identification of problems and selection of appropriate solutions that enable the creation of a barrier-free environment. Purpose: To investigate the accessibility and mobility of the physically disabled, in which areas of activity they face problems, and the role of occupational therapy in enabling the physically disabled to access to public buildings. Methods: A qualitative research method with a literature review was conducted. The literature search was performed in the following electronic databases: CINAHL, PubMed, Web Of Science, OTSeeker and DiKUL. Results: Eleven studies were included in the final analysis. Qualitative data synthesis yielded seven topics for discussion: personal barriers, environmental barriers, economic barriers, occupational therapy interventions, participation in society, discrimination and opportunities for improvement. Discussion and conclusion: The built environment is accessible and useful for everyone when every individual is able to use it. People with mobility disabilities face barriers and problems in various areas of their lives. They face personal and environmental barriers. Poor physical health can also have a negative impact on mental health. The role of occupational therapists in providing easier access is increasing. Occupational therapists plan and implement adaptations and use their knowledge to collaborate with experts from other rehabilitation fields, a multidisciplinary approach promotes an accessible environment. One of the most important tasks of occupational therapists is the regular and appropriate education of other health workers who work with the physically disabled. In cooperation with the communities of physically disabled people, occupational therapists can improve rules and practices, thereby positively influencing their quality of life. Despite numerous researches, additional researches are needed for the further operation and development of the field.
