Abstract

Title:
Rotija Badjura's kindergardens: A support structure on the way toward social equality
Abstract:
The master’s thesis focuses on the work of Slovenian architect Rotija Badjura, especially on the architecture of kindergartens, which she devoted the most attention to. Badjura’s work has gone unnoticed until recently, despite the exceptional quality of her built works. One of the reasons for this is that the work of women, architects even in the 20th century, did not receive proper attention and was thus unjustly ignored. The aim of this thesis is a contribution to correcting this historical error. It draws attention to the quality of Badjura’s work and tries to supplement the research that has been done so far. The main purpose of my thesis is to present Rotija Badjura kindergartens as examples of architecture. Its utalitarian is that some of these kindergartens are not simply practical kindergartens, but architectural kindergartens. Badjura designed them as a complex and pleasant space for children, which is reflected as an architectural articulation of the idea of the world of children. I will prove my thesis on architectural kindergartens through concrete analysis of methods and results of her work. In connection with the work of Rotija Badjura, I will also address the following two issues: the role and opportunities for independent practice of women architects in the second half of the 20th century and the institution of kindergartens as a support for women’s emancipation.
