The issue of literary genres and of the reader-response to an unfamiliar literary text pose the question of when the literary text functions as an independent and complete entity. The study, carried out among third-year students of a college preparatory high school (gimnazija), showed that the reader-response depends on the reader’s literary knowledge as well as his/her reading abilities. Besides the questionnaires, the four-part survey included an excerpt from V. Bartol’s novel Alamut (1938) and his novella Nesrečni ljubimec (Al Araf 1935). The answers were applied to pedagogical practice, i.e., to the selection of contents for the college preparatory high-school curriculum, with special emphasis on the novel and short narrative prose.
