Abstract

Title:Comparison of digital detox strategies and patterns on mobile apps
Abstract:
The transition to constant connectivity, the push towards digitalization, and the emerging culture of self-optimization have led to an awareness of the excessive use of mobile devices, particularly mobile phones and applications. Responsibility for these issues has been shifted to individuals, who, for their own well-being, have been compelled to practice self-limitation and self-control. One concept of self-limitation is digital detox, which, in simple terms, means a period during which a person does not use digital devices. With the rise of the market for various self-limitation tools, the aim of this study is to identify different ideologies, mechanisms, and tools of digital detox that are integrated within mobile devices, social platforms, and ten selected digital detox applications. Using the walkthrough method and comparative analysis, it was possible to identify seven digital detox mechanisms offered by the Android and iOS operating systems, as well as various ways of self-optimizing devices and behavior on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, and five categories of mobile applications that strive for productivity and health as ideologies of digital detox.
