The article deals with the challenges of sustainable development in times of crisis. It shows that crises and wars are affecting the achievement of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), not only in conflict or crisis regions, but everywhere in the world. It outlines the emerging trade-offs in an era of crisis and war and, based on reviews of SDG (non-)implementation, highlights the biggest challenges: delays in progress, changing trends, shifting priorities in meeting immediate needs, constraints and diversions of resources, the creation of institutional barriers, and reduced communication efforts and coordination of sustainable development strategies. Multi-level monitoring and up-to-date empirical analyses of the complex impacts of crises and wars on the SDGs’ implementation are therefore important measures to help revise scenarios, establish trade-offs between the SDGs, and pursue a more integrated and effective approach to sustainable development.
