This paper analyses regulatory and practical aspects of controlling dangerous goods in cargo transport units (CTUs). The paper utilizes a descriptive method and is written based on the analysis of existing laws, regulations, and guidelines related to the transport of dangerous goods by sea. It is divided into two main parts. The first part covers the legal framework, specifically international conventions and codes that regulate the maritime transport of dangerous goods. The foundation of the legal framework is the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG Code), which provides detailed guidelines for safe transport of dangerous goods by sea. It includes requirements for classification, packaging, labelling, documentation, and storage. The second part presents the inspection procedures for cargo transport units carrying dangerous goods, as recommended by the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC). This section includes a detailed description of inspection procedures for CTUs transporting dangerous goods, which include criteria for selecting units for inspection, key elements of inspection (such as the condition of packaging, correct labelling, adequate documentation, etc.), common deficiencies, measures to take in case of deficiencies, and a safety-based approach. By addressing these recommendations, this paper aims to encourage their implementation, which would contribute to improving the safety of dangerous goods transported by sea and ultimately protect human lives, property, and the environment.
