When it comes to my thesis, I explore people's reactions to new political entity called Illyrian Provinces. The focus of my work is merely on the responses of people living in the territory, that is now part of the Republic of Slovenia (Carinthia, Carniola and Istria). The study analyzes regional reaction and also reaction based on individuals social class (such as peasants, intellectuals, bourgeoisie and clergy). Additionally, I also write about individuals, who played a significant role in shaping Slovenian identity during the period of the Provinces.
The sociological section discusses four theories of nation and nationalism. The theories are examined within the context of the Illyrian Provinces, where I explore the question of nationality – was it towards the Provinces or merely just an act to empower Slovenian nationality. Finally, it represents the long lasting influence of Napoleon and Franch rule left on the Slovenian territories.
