The master thesis presents and analyses the guitar Sonata written by the Spanish composer Antonio José. It is considered one of the greatest contributions to guitar literature of the 20th century. We will begin by discussing the composer's life, historical characteristics of Spain and his composing style. In the second part, we will present sonatas in the first half of the 20th century, the history of José's sonata and we will review the manuscript. In the remainder of the thesis we will analyse the whole sonata, movement by movement. We will focus on the structure and the formal and harmonic analysis.
