In this thesis, I adress the question of ethics of memory in society and art. How are we shaped by our common traumatic past, how should we remember collective trauma and how to speak about trauma? Is that even possible? By looking at different authors who discuss these subjects I aim to illustrate the development of trauma theory and to highlight the significance of joint organised memory work, which preserves cultural memory across the generations. Events like war, natural disasters or mass violence, transform our societies and transform the very way in which we remember them through media and various art practices, through literature, film and memorials.
