Abstract

Title:All (the stuff) that is mine I carry with me: Material culture in the context of a temporary move to Barcelona
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the material luggage of individuals who have moved to Barcelona for a limited period of time with a particular focus on the classification of personal items during the move, the change in their value in the new context, and the items to which individuals attach emotional meanings. The introductory part describes the context of the research, followed by a theoretical part that defines the field of material culture in anthropology, historically describing its research, indicating the key works and shifts and the main theoretical perspectives. This is followed by descriptions of contemporary research on the object world in Slovenia, which is thematically related to the thesis, and research linking the field of material culture and migration. The thesis then combines different concepts such as object classification, memory and attachment to objects with ethnographic examples from the research. This is followed by a chapter that examines the impact of digital technologies, or modern modes of communication, of geographically distant people along with their need for objects that represent a link to their home. In the final chapters, the descriptions of objects demonstrate the variety of meanings they can have for individuals.
