Abstract
V diplomski nalogi predstavljamo trnato gledičevko (Gleditsia triacanthos L.), listopadno drevo, ki izvira iz Severne Amerike in je zdaj razširjeno po vsem svetu zaradi svoje okrasne vrednosti. Namen diplomske naloge je preučiti koristne lastnosti drevesa ter opozoriti na potencialna tveganja pri uporabi dreves te vrste. Drevo lahko zraste v višino do 50 m. Prepoznavno je po dolgih ostrih trnih in velikih strokih, ki vsebujejo semena obdana s sladko pulpo. Trnato gledičevko cenijo zaradi njenega trdnega lesa, ki se uporablja za izdelavo pohištva. Tradicionalno njene stroke uporabljajo kot sladilo ter krmo za živali. Drevo predstavlja tudi določena tveganja, vključno s fizičnimi poškodbami zaradi trnov in v manjši meri potencialno strupenostjo za ljudi in živali. Pregled literature kaže, da seme in plod trnate gledičevke vsebujeta relativno veliko količino sladkorjev, beljakovin, olja, maščobnih kislin in vlaknin. Poleg tega pa vsebuje rastlina pomembne sekundarne metabolite, kot so alkaloidi, saponini, tanini in flavonoidi, ki imajo potencial za uporabo v medicini in farmaciji. Guma iz semen, bogata z galaktomanani, je uporabna v živilski in farmacevtski industriji. Ekstrakti iz različnih delov rastline kažejo protivnetne, antioksidativne in protirakave aktivnosti. Listi trnate gledičevke vsebujejo večje količine alkaloida triakantin, ki lahko povzroči prebavne težave in zastrupitev, semena pa vsebujejo večjo količino taninov, ki lahko ob prevelikem zaužitju povzročajo prebavne motnje.

Title:Use and toxicity of the honey locust tree (Gleditsia triacanthos)
Abstract:
In this thesis we present the honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos), a deciduous tree native to North America, which is now widespread globally due to its ornamental value. The tree can grow up to 50 meters. It is recognizable by its long, sharp thorns and large pods containing seeds surrounded by a sweet pulp. The honey locust is valued for its hard wood, used in furniture making. Traditionally, its pods are used as a sweetener and animal feed. The tree also poses certain risks, including physical injuries from its thorns and, to a lesser extent, potential toxicity to humans and animals. The aim of this thesis is to examine the beneficial properties of the tree and highlight potential risks. Literature review indicates that the honey locust seeds and fruit contain high levels of sugars, protein, oils, fatty acids and fibers. Additionally, the plant contains important secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and flavonoids, which have potential for use in medicine and pharmacy. The gum from the seeds, rich in galactomannans, is useful in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Extracts from various parts of the plant exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer properties. The leaves of the honey locust contain significant amounts of the alkaloid triacanthine, which can cause digestive issues and poisoning, while the seeds contain a high concentration of tannins, which can lead to digestive disturbances if consumed in excessive amounts.
