Investigation of Dalmatian ancestry in golden jackals in Slovenia’s neighbouring countries

Abstract
Although the golden jackal (Canis aureus) has been present along the Adriatic Coast of southeastern Europe for over 500 years, its range has only recently begun to expand further north. Genetic analyses conducted in the region suggest that a contact zone is emerging between the Dalmatian and Pannonian populations in southwestern Slovenia and northeastern Italy. According to earlier studies, the Pannonian population exhibited greater genetic diversity in the study area. The Dalmatian population appears to contribute only a small portion to the current jackal ancestry in Slovenia. Through the analysis of 73 golden jackal samples – 46 previously collected from Slovenia and from central and southern Dalmatia along the Adriatic Coast, as well as 27 new samples from Croatia, northeastern Italy, Austria (Styria), and Greece – we identified two main genetic clusters within the study area. One distinct population was found in Dalmatia on Croatia's Adriatic Coast, while a more widely distributed Pannonian population spanned regions including Styria in Austria, Krk, Dugi otok, Plitvice in Croatia, Italy, Greece, and Slovenia. The study also detected a few jackals with partial Dalmatian ancestry in western Slovenia, eastern Italy, and on Dugi otok, Croatia. While the small sample size warrants cautious interpretation, our findings offer valuable insights into the distribution of the Dalmatian population and help clarify jackal gene flow in a region where the species is still relatively new to the ecosystem.

Title:Raziskovanje dalmatinskih prednikov zlatih šakalov v sosednjih državah Slovenije
Abstract:
Čeprav je zlati šakal (Canis aureus) prisoten ob Jadranski obali jugovzhodne Evrope že več kot 500 let, se je njegovo območje šele pred kratkim začelo širiti proti severu. Genetske analize, izvedene na tem območju, nakazujejo, da se na jugozahodu Slovenije in severovzhodu Italije oblikuje kontaktna cona med dalmatinsko in panonsko populacijo. Po dosedanjih raziskavah je panonska populacija na raziskovanem območju pokazala večjo genetsko raznolikost. Zdi se, da dalmatinska populacija prispeva le majhen delež k trenutnemu poreklu šakalov v Sloveniji. Z analizo 73 vzorcev zlatega šakala – 46 že prej zbranih v Sloveniji ter v osrednji in južni Dalmaciji ob Jadranski obali, ter 27 novih vzorcev iz Hrvaške, severovzhodne Italije, Avstrije (Štajerske) in Grčije – smo znotraj proučevanega območja identificirali dve glavni genetski skupini. Ena ločena populacija je bila odkrita v Dalmaciji ob Jadranski obali Hrvaške, medtem ko se je bolj razširjena panonska populacija raztezala po regijah, vključno s Štajersko v Avstriji, Krkom, Dugim otokom, Plitvicami na Hrvaškem, Italijo, Grčijo in Slovenijo. Študija je prav tako odkrila nekaj šakalov z delnim dalmatinskim poreklom v zahodni Sloveniji, vzhodni Italiji in na Dugem otoku na Hrvaškem. Čeprav majhno število vzorcev zahteva previdno interpretacijo, naše ugotovitve ponujajo dragocen vpogled v razširjenost dalmatinske populacije in pomagajo pojasniti pretok genov šakalov v regiji, kjer je vrsta še vedno relativno nova v ekosistemu.
