Abstract

Title:Fake news as a tool of warfare: the case of Ukraine in the first year of the war
Abstract:
The term "fake news" has only been around for the last decade, but that doesn't mean we haven't encountered its meaning before in human history. The term fake news describes false information that can intentionally or unintentionally mislead and harm. Among them we can count: satire, parody, fabrication, manipulation, advertising, propaganda and deepfake. With the modern warfare, which is no longer based only on the use of conventional weapons, new dimensions of combat have opened up, where one tries to gain dominance over the opponent. Fake news has become a means of warfare in the information and communication dimension. With the war in Ukraine, we could see a huge increase in fake news, both on social networks and in other media. Their purpose is primarily to spread propaganda and consolidate public support for the achievement of political goals. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the time frame is limited to the first year of the Russian offensive. Based on selected examples of fake news and their analysis, it is explained how fake news influenced the media coverage of the war.
