In the final thesis, I discuss violence against the elderly in domestic and institutional settings. First, I introduce some of the authors who have worked on ageism, how ageism is viewed today and how the elderly perceive themselves, and I highlight some of the myths about ageism. I then turn to violence against the elderly, by outlining the types of violence to which the elderly are exposed, where they experience violence, some high-profile cases of violence in institutional settings in recent years, the factors that can lead to violence, some reasons why the elderly remain silent about violence, and the consequences of such violence. Finally, I touch on systemic solutions to address violence against older people and give some examples of good practice. I test all this through the research question and the thesis.
