In this master thesis the ontologies are described, where they are used, why they are important and how they can be documented in a computer format. The problem of ontology matching is described and the motivation for solving this problem is given. The multiple possible ways of calculating the similarities or differences between entities are presented, which gives the basis for the matching. The most commonly used methods for solving the ontology matching problem are described in detail and it is explained how the results are used in the industry. To illustrate the derived theoretical results the basic methods are used on different ontologies and the limitations of these methods and possible improvements are shown.
