Abstract

Title:Negative consequences of caring for an elderly person for informal caregivers in Slovenia
Abstract:
In the thesis we dealt with the negative consequences of caring for an elderly person, which are felt by informal caregivers in Slovenia. The task was based on the data of the first representative survey on the quality of social care at home in Slovenia ("Quality of social care at home: evaluation, data and recommendations" (Hlebec in drugi 2014)), whereby the aim was to check what burdens informal caregivers report, whether they can be classified into several groups and what their characteristics are. In our case, a total of 1151 respondents participated. Key results were obtained using the hierarchical cluster analysis and analysis of variance to distinguish between groups. Depending on the type of burden, we divided it into three groups – physical, psychological and social consequences of caregiving, more precisely physical burden, psychological burden and time pressure. We found that the majority of carers are women and that almost two thirds of carers are over 60 years old. The final analysis of the results showed that physical burden is the most pronounced, while time pressure is an important factor for younger respondents. It can be seen that the values increase with the age of the caregiver for both psychological and physical stress. The area of residence is also a very important factor, as living in the countryside had a negative effect on all types of burdens.
