Abstract

Title:Study of the curing process of a tannin-based adhesive using an automated bonding evaluation system
Abstract:
In the thesis, we studied the curing process of tannin-based adhesives. We used three different adhesive mixtures (T-H, T-HMDA, and T-H-HMDA), which were selected based on preliminary tests. The curing process of the adhesive was investigated based on shear strength, which was determined using two methods. The first method was conducted with the Automated Bonding Evaluation System (ABES), while the second was the standard method according to SIST EN 205:2016. With the ABES method, we examined the adhesives at temperatures of 125, 150, 175, and 200 °C, as well as at ten different pressing times ranging from 15 to 600 seconds. In the standard shear strength determination, we pressed the specimens for 15 minutes at pressing temperatures of 175 and 200 °C. We found that the shear strength of the adhesive joints increased with pressing time and reached a maximum value after a certain period. At higher pressing temperatures the adhesives cured faster and achieved greater shear strengths of the adhesive joints. The composition of the adhesive mixture significantly affected the final strength. The highest shear strength determined by the ABES method was found for specimens bonded with T-HMDA adhesive at 200 °C. Testing according to the standard method showed that specimens bonded with T-HMDA adhesive at a temperature of 175 °C exhibited sufficient shear strength for classifying this adhesive in durability class C1.
