Abstract

Title:The Question of the General Conversation Usage of the Adjective »Božji/božji« (Godly)
Abstract:
The master thesis titled The Question of the General Conversation Usage of the Adjective »Božji/božji« (Godly) presents the question of the usage of the adjective »Božji/božji« (godly), which is used in Slovene in the genitive and possessive forms and written with a lower or an upper case. In the theological profession, the need to capitalise the adjective when it expresses the individual possession of the Christian God became apparent, but this was only permitted by orthography in the year 2001. The use of the capital letter whenever the adjective is used in the possessive function was introduced by the emerging ePravopis (eOrhography) and Pravopis 8.0 (Orthography 8.0). The analysis of the texts from the Gigafida 2.0 corpus shows that the adjective »Božji/božji« (godly) is often written in a lower case, but the use is not always relevant. The key to informed usage, which this thesis seeks to encourage, is an understanding of the semantic difference between the capital and lower case and an understanding of the meaning of the adjective in the context of the text.
