This thesis explores the work-life balance of parents in large families. The research was inspired by my own personal experience as I come from a large family and, during my studies and practice, I gained insights into the challenges that parents face in balancing work and family commitments.
The theoretical part of the thesis covers topics such as the definition of the family, parenthood, and the role of motherhood and fatherhood in modern society. I explored how parents in large families cope with the challenges of balancing work and family life, and what strategies and support systems they use to successfully balance these two important areas.
I conducted qualitative research using semi-structured interviews. I collected data through six interviews with parents from large families. The interviews were analysed qualitatively, which allowed me to gain a deeper insight into the experiences and challenges of these parents.
The results of the research showed that the parents from large families interviewed work in demanding occupations that often require more than 40 hours of work per week, which makes it difficult to balance with family commitments. Family life is very dynamic and challenging, and parents value the moments they share with their families, but often feel tired and stressed. Strategies such as sharing tasks between partners, planning, and working together are key to reconciling work and family life.
Parents want more flexibility in working hours and more understanding from employers and family members. Challenges to reconciliation include unexpected situations such as children's illnesses, which make balancing commitments even more difficult. The support of a social network, including the help of relatives, is crucial for successful reconciliation.
The thesis provides important insights into the complexities of work-life balance in large families and offers recommendations for improving support to parents in this area. Based on the findings of this research, social workers can develop programmes to help parents organise their time, manage stress and find sources of support. One of the key strategies that social workers can use is to help parents build and strengthen a social network that includes partners, extended family and community resources.
