Abstract

Title:Distribution analysis of European False Stitchwort (Pseudostellaria europaea) in Slovenia
Abstract:
One of the most remarkable plants of Slovenian flora and the only European representative of the genus Pseudostellaria, the European false stitchwort (Pseudostellaria europaea) was first described in "Pod Turnom" in Ljubljana's Tivoli Park. The research for this master's thesis was carried out on the initiative of the manager of the locus classicus - the Service of the Landscape Park of Tivoli, Rožnik and Šišenski hrib. Despite the relatively good knowledge of the distribution of the species, no detailed analyses of its habitat characteristics have been carried out in Slovenia. There is also a lack of knowledge of its biology and ecology, which is essential for successful management of the species. Within the framework of the Master's thesis, we collected and organised data on the known localities of European false stitchwort. Twenty of these localities were visited in the field. We inventoried the vascular plants at the sites and used this data to describe the ecological conditions at the sites. We found that the ecological conditions are similar across the European false stitchwort sites, and that temperature and soil moisture are crucial for the species to thrive. In the second part of the thesis, we analysed the climatic conditions of the known sites of European false stitchwort and, based on the information gathered, developed a bioclimatic model of its potential distribution in Slovenia. We have found that there are areas in Slovenia with suitable bioclimatic conditions where the presence of the species has not yet been confirmed. On the basis of the research results, we have prepared guidelines for the management of the locus classicus of European false stitchwort, which will serve to protect and conserve this rare and extremely interesting species.
