Abstract

Title:
Analysis of the effects on the lifetime of climbing ropes
Abstract:
Previous research has investigated the extent to which the drop in load capacity of a climbing rope is affected by the various factors to which the ropes are exposed in real use. It has been shown that all factors together contribute up to 35% of the drop in load capacity over a period of two years of regular use of the rope. In this thesis we wanted to study the separate influence of selected factors which we consider to be the most influential. In the laboratory, we tried to simulate the different levels of wear and the different levels of thermal load, as well as their combinations on a brand-new rope. We have also simulated the loads resulting from falls and other uses of the climbing rope. To obtain information on the load carrying capacity of the tested samples, tensile failure tests were carried out. It has been shown that a linear increase in the wear rate does not result in a linear decrease in the load capacity. The combination of the same thermal load at different wear levels results in the same drop in load capacity. The rope specimens subjected to the highest load levels (wear and heat) achieved a 26% drop in load capacity. It was also found that the multiple mechanical loads used to simulate the rope drops did not have a significant effect on the load capacity. We assume that this result is due to our loading procedure.
