Abstract
Poznavanje gostot jelenjadi nam daje boljši pregled nad populacijo in nam omogoča boljše gospodarjenje z vrsto.

Abstract:
The understanding of deer densities enables a better overview of the population and better management of the species. So far the data about the abundance of deer population gained on the basis of collection have been used in Slovenia. Since these data are not always sufficiently accurate, we have acquired more accurate data with the method of counting piles of excrement. The method was executed in three areas: Snežnik, Kočevje and Pohorje. Within an area 40 quadrants with one-kilometre sides were chosen to cover the biggest possible gradient of deer density. Inside each of the quadrants we set up sample panels sized 400 or 200 m2, depending on the transparency of the terrain. Piles of excrement on the panels were then counted in certain time intervals. Acquired data were converted into data per quadrant and compared with the data acquired with the calculation based on the method of collection. The method of counting piles of excrement for establishing deer densities proved itself to be very useful. It has been discovered that there are more deer in the nature than we presumed on the basis of collection. We might acquire even more accurate data about the abundance of deer population if the panels were visited more often during the vegetation period to avoid fast decomposition of excrement.
