Abstract

Title:Iconography of Angel Musicians in the Middle Ages
Abstract:
The development of the iconography of angel musicians extends back to Ancient Greece and Pythagoras’ concept of ‘harmony of the spheres’, which was discussed by many Ancient philosophers. Cosmological themes persevered through association with Christian dogmatism in the writings of Christian writers in the Middle Ages, when the development of the motif of the angel artists begins. The motif of the angel that moves and/or supports the spheres is a key step to the development of the motif of angel musicians. Beginning with the 14th century images of angels that represent a part of a heavenly musical harmony and that make music by singing or playing instruments start to become more widespread. With time, the motif of angel musicians attained iconographic complexity and diversity in connection with different types of depictions of musical groups, which suggest symbolic meaning to heavenly music and open questions on the influence of contemporary musical practices of the time. Coronation of the Virgin is one of the most important motifs that include angelic music in its depictions and is characteristic mostly of Italian art from the 1300s onwards.
