São Paulo is the largest Brazilian city, which experienced a very rapid trend of rural-to-urban migration after the 1970s. The reason for this action was a booming economy that attracted huge numbers of migrants who wanted a better life. The result was the rapid and premature urbanization of the entire city, resulting in the expansion and densification of slums called favelas. Favelas are an urban agglomeration characterized by a great socio-economic disadvantage of its inhabitants and a lack of basic services. With the rise of favelas, the city showed a social heterogeneity that divides the rich and the poor. Today, various programs are attempting to address the challenges faced by slum dwellers, which requires comprehensive and sustainable approaches that include, first and foremost, the improvement of basic services.
