Abstract

Title:The decline of the Counts of Celje and consolidation of Habsburg rule in Inner Austrian lands
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on events between 1436 and 1460, when the Counts of Celje experienced their final ascent before facing extinction in the male line. Despite numerous challenges, the Habsburgs managed to maintain territorial integrity in their Inner Austrian lands and consolidate their authority over the region. This control persisted until the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy after the end of World War I. The work first presents the developement of the Celje and Habsburg families separately up to the beginning of the 15th century, providing readers with an understanding of the subsequent course of events. It then describes the events of the Celje-Habsburg feud. The thesis further explores power struggles in Hungary, closely linked to the extinction of the Celje family. Finally, it describes the battles for the extensive Celje heritage, in which Frederick III of Habsburg emerges as the victor, ensuring the consolidation of Habsburg authority in Carniola, Carinthia and Styria.
