Abstract

Title:Attitudes of primary school students towards food waste in the school environment
Abstract:
Food is a value and we must treat it carefully. As consumers, we expect food to be of high quality and safe. In the master's thesis, the subject is the attitude of elementary school students toward food waste. We investigated whether there are differences in the knowledge and attitude of elementary school children in connection with the popularity of dishes and food waste according to gender. We obtained the data by surveying students in the first, second and third years of education. An online questionnaire was used, and the amount of wasted food in the school was also measured. A total of 165 students were included in this part of the research, of whom 27 were third graders, 73 were sixth graders, and 65 were ninth graders. Students were presented with information about wasted food at school meals; this information was obtained by measuring the amount of wasted food and through activities we carried out in the 3rd, 6th and 9th grades. Through the research, we have found that students acquired new skills during various pedagogical activities that included active teaching methods, especially the practical part of preparing meals and measuring the amount of food waste; moreover, the amount of food waste at school meals has also decreased. According to the findings of the research, students want to know more information and data about the foods they consume in the school environment, which affects their acceptance of food and the reduction of food waste. The research results have shown that through a suitable educational process we can greatly influence students' attitude toward food waste and their behavior, which is related to reducing the amount of food waste in the school environment.
