Abstract

Title:Strategies in Translating Names of Slovenian Constitutional Bodies in the German Translation of the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia
Abstract:
Legal translation requires precise knowledge of the legal systems of both the source and target cultures. The differences between the legal systems involved in a translation can be observed at a linguistic level, particularly at the level of legal terminology. The master's thesis focuses on specific legal concepts, mainly on the names of Slovenian constitutional bodies and their translation equivalents in the 1992 German translation of the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia. While the theoretical section outlines the origins and development of the concept of the constitution as the supreme and fundamental legal act of a state, the linguistic section mainly examines the factors affecting the translation process and its outcome, that is the selection of an appropriate and efficient translation strategy. Drawing on Alenka Kocbek's interdisciplinary model of translating legal texts, the empirical section highlights the key factors determining the selection of a particular translation strategy.
