In Slovenia, due to the increase in the number of inhabitants, the typical lifestyle and, last but not least, the source of income, there is an ever-increasing need to place new residential areas and activities (shops, business zones, etc.) in the space. As a result, there are initiatives to change the purposeful use of space from non-building to building land, as investments on new building land are easier to achieve than investments on undeveloped and devalued land due to various economic and social factors. Spatial planning is important in this regard, which, through thoughtful placement of activities, directing settlement towards infill development, rational use of land and revitalization of devalued areas, on the one hand ensures sufficient areas for the development and expansion of settlements and economic activities, and on the other hand enables the protection of agricultural and forest land. In the assignment, on the example of selected settlements in the Municipality of Cerknica, for a period of fifteen years, we showed the relationship between vacant unused building land in the settlements and the expansion of building land with a change in the purposeful use of space to previously non-building land (such as forest and agricultural land). With this, we showed the actual situation in the area and concluded that settlement in settlements is directed towards infill development, which is one of the guidelines of sustainable spatial development. In addition, the assignment presents the problems of implementing infill development in practice and provides various ways to more effectively activate existing undeveloped and devalued land.
