Abstract

Title:Measures for decrease of health presenteeism of nurses : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Medical presenteeism is a condition in which employees come to work and stay at work despite physical, psychological and other problems that can affect their performance. It is particularly common among nurses who come to work when they are sick, not only endangering their own health but also affecting the health of patients and colleagues and the quality of care provided. Purpose: The aim of the literature review in this thesis is to explore measures to reduce health presenteeism among nurses. Methods: The descriptive method was used. Literature retrieved from PubMed (Medline), CINAHL Ultimate and ScienceDirect bibliographic databases was reviewed. The literature used is less than 10 years old, fully accessible and written in English. 11 items of literature were included in the analysis. Results: Approaches that are key to reducing health presenteeism in nursing relate to organisational measures, resourcing, leadership, nurse health support, communication, measures to improve working conditions and mental health care. Adequate staffing levels and working relationships that provide a sense of security, acceptance and being heard are key. Discussion and conclusion: To reduce health presenteeism among nurses, it is important to link all actions together, with good leadership, organisation and resourcing being key. All this can be ensured through good communication. It is important that nurses feel accepted and safe in their workplace and that they can easily express their needs. Health support and mental health care are also highlighted, and it is very important to point out that both illness and poor mental health are normal and need to be taken care of. This is the only way nurses can do their job well.
