In writing my thesis, I focused on the historical development of self-interest communities. I was interested in the historical background of self-management in Yugoslavia, and then, I delved into the establishment of self-interest communities, which was legalized in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) through the new constitution in 1974. These communities covered areas, such as material production, housing and utilities, and social activities, aiming to increase people’s participation in decision-making. In the empirical part, I explored their establishment, functioning, and effectiveness based on the reporting in the newspaper Delo during the period of 1974. I also examined the influence of the League of Communists on self-management areas, as well as the impact of the complexity of the constitution. The conclusion I reached is that due to the overly ambitious design and implementation of the new constitution, additional inefficiencies arose within society, which it could not afford during the inflationary period.
