Abstract

Title:
Conceptual design for an intergenerational community in Bežigrad
Abstract:
Western societies are faced with a rapidly ageing population and declining birth rates, while at the same time life expectancy is increasing. We age differently today than we did in the past, so many times old solutions are no longer useful in practice. Often, when we think of senior housing, we think only of nursing homes, but institutionalised forms already represent only a small part of care today and will not be able to meet the needs of an ageing population in the future. The question arises whether the future of care for the elderly lies in increasing institutional forms or in finding new models and practices that are already present in the West. Buildings are often designed for an idealized user that unfortunately does not exist. Architects, with the right approach, can address challenges posed by an ageing population. We must design and build environments usable by all generations, inclusive and respectful, fostering a sense of sovereignty for each user. The new intergenerational community in Bežigrad district offers sheltered housing and household communities for the elderly, alongside housing for younger generations. It includes a daycare center with café and restaurant, catering to both the local residents and the broader community. With flexible apartment layouts, the neighborhood accommodates diverse living styles and allows for easy modifications in the future.
