In today’s context of the dominance of megalomaniacal architecture and tourism, Preluk Bay stands out as a neglected and unused natural resource. Located in the far north of the Gulf of Rijeka, this bay offers the potential to preserve natural beauty and create a peaceful oasis in the middle of an urban environment. The Preluk revitalization project represents an innovative architectural approach that changes the paradigm of tourism infrastructure within the coastal ecosystem. Instead of conventional hotel complexes, the focus is on a sustainable model that integrates with the natural and cultural identity of the region.
In the diploma thesis, the history of Preluk, its current state and the approach to its restoration and revitalization were researched and presented. The origin of the project stems from two key characteristics of the location. The first is the proximity of the sea and tramontana, a strong wind that provides ideal conditions for wind and water sports. Thanks to these natural conditions, Preluk is an ideal location for the development of a windsurfing center, attracting fans of extreme sports and water activities. In addition, the presence of the quarry offers an innovative accommodation solution - glamping units. Between the sea and the quarry, Preluk offers a variety of programs and facilities, including areas for rest, recreation and sports activities, parks and camping. It also promotes inclusivity, welcoming local residents as well, not just select tourists.
The revitalization of Preluk emphasizes ecological awareness by using local stone for the construction of traditional masonry stone walls, which are a key component in the construction process and which enable the creation of basic volumes necessary for all functional spaces. The main features of the project are sustainable tourism that protects the environment, culture and involves the community. Combining architectural creativity with care for the environment, the project changes the look of the coast and encourages a stronger connection between people and nature.
