In my thesis, I will research the strategic game of chess, its history, pieces, their shapes, character and moves, as well as materials from my hometown, Velenje, - clay and coal (lignite and xylith). I will dig up the clay in the lawn behind my house, refine it and use it to make light colored chess pieces. For the dark colored chess pieces I will use coal, which is better known as a fossil fuel and less known as a material used in design. Since the coal consists mainly of decaying wood, I will try to design and process it using techniques that are typical for woodworking. I will mainly focus on grinding, cutting, and focusing to the wood turning technique. In the practical part of the thesis, I will design and make a unique set for the game of chess by researching the properties and potential use of these two materials, in such a way that I will try to capture their characteristics in the form of the final product. The entire set will be based on a visual and semantic game of contrasts, which will be portrayed through color, material and shape.
