My thesis explores the ethical dilemmas that arise in social work centres, where the social workers' personal beliefs, legislation, and professionalism collide. The theoretical introduction provides a definition of social work and public authority, which includes social work centres and the legislation that serves as the basis for their operation, and the political framework that governs social work at social work centres. Next, the chapter Autonomy of social work outlines the profession of social work as having a unique social function. The chapter deals with the issue of maintaining autonomy and the problems that social workers are faced with at social work centres. It also touches upon the professional identity of social workers. The chapter Ethics in social work consists of a definition of ethics, the description of the ethical codex as the basis of maintaining social workers' professional integrity and the fundamental value and principle of social work. The chapter Ethical dilemmas and challenges of social work contains the definition of ethical dilemas, the description of dual relationships and relationship boundaries, and a representation of ethical decision-making models. The final chapter describes facing ethical dilemmas, which entails intervision, supervision, and teamwork. The research has been conducted qualitatively with partly structured interviews, whereby I acquired the data of six interviewees. The measuring instrument used for my research were the interview guidelines. The questions were designed based on five topics (social work and public authority, ethics in social work, ethical dilemmas and challenges of social work, facing ethical dilemmas, and the autonomy of social work). The acquired data has been qualitatively analysed. The results were logged and interpreted using the theory from the theoretical part. Suggestions for potential improvement have been put forward with respect to situations where social workers at social work centres find themselves torn between personal beliefs, the legislation, and professionalism.
