Abstract

Title:Mechanical properties of thermally modified white rot in beachwood : B. Sc. thesis
Abstract:
White rot fungi are the main cause of beech wood degradation in forests or wood procesing storages. To enhance wood's properties, we performed a thermal modification of a beech wood, colonized by a white rot fungi. Thermal modification processes of wood is used to increase it's dimensional stability and pest resistance, it however deteriorates the mechanical properties and colour of wood. Level of change depends of temperature height during modification process. We can control the process by managing parameters, such as temperature level and duration, to achieve desired level of the cell-wall structural change. We did a thermal modification of beech wood colonized by a white rot fungi, at a temperature of 170 °C, 190 °C and 210 °C. During the process, we attempted to determine the loss of mass, colour changes and differences in mechanical properties, mainly focusing on bending hardness. We concluded, that mechanical properties of a beech wood, colonized by white rot fungi, do in fact deteriorate, especially when processing it at the highest temperature of 210 °C.
