The thesis Experiential learning about the Crannog dwellers and their culture for children in grade 1 deals with different approaches, how to efficiently present the history to children at school, and gain an insight to society. Children through experiential learning acquire information about Crannog dwellers and their culture. At the same time children learn the Crannog dwellers from the Ljubljana Marsh are on the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This way the child becomes familiar with the importance of findings, cultural heritage and awareness of his/her own culture, which is an important step in the development of the child’s identity and positive self-image.
In the theoretical part the fundamental concepts of the society, local environment, and experiential learning are defined, but also the Ljubljana Marsh is presented and its location and geological description. The life of Crannog dwellers, their social system and diet are described in detail and by that also their agriculture, livestock farming, foraging, fishing and also the development of craftwork and important findings (a wooden wheel, a dugout canoe, a bow).
In the empirical part there are four activities being presented, which were carried out between the children, aged six to seven years, in the first grade of dr. Vito Kraigher Primary school. Children participated in different activities and gained certain knowledge about the Crannog dwellers and their culture. Each activity has its own evaluation at the end.
