The trend of surface treatment has been increasingly oriented towards environment friendly wood coatings including natural oils and waxes. 11 wood coatings based on linseed, tung tree, hemp, sunflower, soybean, safflower oil and beeswax were chosen. Because of high demands for dark wood, we selected Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.) for the basis. The quality of an individual coating system was assessed according to standard methods: resistance to selected liquids, resistance to dry heat, gloss, degree of hardness and odour based on a survey. The research showed good
resistance to dry heat, differences in resistance to cold liquids, somewhat longer drying time of coatings without a siccative, silky gloss of the surface, highlighted wood colour and no disturbing or bad odour. Because of short
drying time, all conventional products chosen, plus one natural oil, are suitable for industry. Since waxes and oils are renewable, they are suitable for all surfaces if the user is prepared to regularly clean, maintain and, if
necessary, restore wooden surfaces.
