Abstract

Title:
First aid management of an unconscious casualty with a suspected spinal injury : master thesis
Abstract:
Introduction: Providing first aid to a casualty with a suspected spinal injury can present a great challenge for the potential first aid provider, especially when the victim is unconscious. Studies have shown that the knowledge of first aid providers about providing first aid to an unconscious person with a suspected spinal injury is often insufficient.Various dilemmas and fears of first aid providers also often pose a problem. Purpose: The purpose was to find out the theoretical knowledge and dilemmas of laypeople, semi-professionals and health-care workers about first aid measures in the case of spinal injuries in an unconscious casualty. Methods: We used a quantitative approach with a descriptive research method to obtain data. We conducted a cross-sectional study. We used a questionnaire as a data collection technique. Results: Health-care workers and medical education students have a higher level of theoretical knowledge of first aid in case of spinal injuries compared to semi-professionals and laypeople. People who attended the first aid training in the last year have a higher level of theoretical knowledge about first aid compared to the rest of the respondents. A higher self-assessment of the ability to provide first aid is associated with a higher level of theoretical knowledge of first aid management of an unconscious casualty with a suspected spinal injury. The greatest level of fear about providing first aid to an unconscious casualty with a suspected spinal injury is the fear that the injured person will become disabled – this represents the biggest fear to 31,1 % of the respondents. Discussion and conclusion: Providing adequate first aid measures in the case of an unconsious casualty with suspected spinal injury is essential for an optimal treatment outcome or the survival of the injured person, but (potential) first aid providers often have inadequate knowledge, various fears and dilemmas. These findings implore medical professionals and all other people who are involved in teaching first aid that measures should be taken to improve the situation in this field. Topics that appear to be less well-known or poorly understood among people need adequate discussion in first aid manuals and in the context of training for the laypeople and professional workers. They also represent a challenge for in-depth monitoring and study.
