Abstract:
J. Kersnik in A. P. Čehov sta sodobnika (živela sta v istem obdobju).

Keywords:TITLE:Janko Kersnik and Anton Chekhov were contemporaries, and although Kersnik is a novelist while Chekhov is more famous as a playwright, they are both masters of realistic narrative. The theme of death, especially the death of a peasant, seen from different angles, is quite frequent in Chekhov's stories (The Steppe, Peasants, Bargaining, Gusev etc.). In the limited number of stories by Kersnik, the story The Death of a Peasant takes an outstanding place, with its dominant theme of death, whereas in the other stories (Mačkova očeta, Tone Mohorič, Rojenica) death appears as a subsidiary theme. This paper surveys the mastery of Kersnik and Chekhov in presenting in a realistic manner the attitude of the peasant towards death./KEYWORDS:Slovene literature, Russian literature, 19th century, short prose, literary motif, death, peasant, Realism, Romantism, Impressionism, poetical, psychology, philosophy of life
